Retreats of this type were established all over the Soviet Union. Their purpose was to provide a sanctuary in which writers, composers, filmmakers and other artist types could get creative. This one in Borjomi was for the sole use of members of the Composers’ Union of the USSR. Although not 100% clear, its abandonment is likely linked to a dispute in the early 2000s over ownership of the land/buildings between the Composers’ Union and the Georgian government, with the legal outcome resulting in the latter’s favour.
