Chronicles of Georgia
Location: Tbilisi, Georgia
Constructed: 1985 (work is still continuing)
Sculptor: Zurab Tsereteli
Alternative name: History Memorial of Georgia
Genre: Soviet monument, former USSR
Consisting of sixteen pillars, the monument celebrates 3,000 years of Georgian history and 2,000 years of Christianity in Georgia. The columns depict important scenes from Georgian history on their upper reaches, while the lower sections portray stories from the life of Christ. Work on the monumental structure started in 1985 but is still ongoing. A plausible reason for the delayed completion could be down to the fact that the original project was funded by the Soviet Union and, after its collapse in the early 1990s, and the subsequent turmoil in Georgia itself, the money ran out and it’s not until more recently that (limited) funding has become available once more.
