My parents were both brutalist architects. My mother trained from 1945-1951 in London & my father alongside Sir Leslie Martin in Liverpool from 1947- 1954 ( two years doing military service in Cyprus).
My mother worked for Sir Denys Lasdun on The National Theatre and St James’s flats Green Park. She then became an architect historian and catalogued architectural drawings for the RIBA Drawings collection.
I am now researching their influences.
My father lived along side Alison & Peter Smithson.
Hello Kate, thank you for your interesting comment regarding your parents and their association with brutalist architecture. To have been part of the team that designed the National Theatre is something to be proud of, and I always enjoy admiring Leslie Martin’s nearby Royal Festival Hall when I am visiting the South Bank. Good luck with your research. I wrote this post about post-war modernism and brutalism in London a few years back, which you might be interested to read. Regards, Mark
