The centrally-located collection of buildings are situated on the site of an ancient Roman castrum (military encampment) that later became the permanent settlement of Emona (circa 35 BCE), a forerunner for present-day Ljubljana. The neighbourhood also comprised existing residential buildings and the estate was designed to complement these and also expose the archaeological remains.
