Former Cosmos Cinema
Location: Zhytomyr, Ukraine
Completed: 1987
Architects: Vasily Mikitenko (architect) and Alexander Kostyuk (artist)
Mosaic: “Constellation of Space”
Genre: Modernist, Soviet architecture, former USSR
Zhytomyr’s association with the Soviet space program is linked to the rocket engineer, Sergei Korolev who was born in the city in 1907. The mosaic covering parts of the now-abandoned Cosmos Cinema is titled “Constellation of Space”. Unusual for the time, this space-themed artwork does not feature any cosmonauts or other more obvious representations of the cosmos but rather focuses on the endlessness of the universe through the use of curved lines and saturated colours, with shades of blue being most dominant.
