Hotel National
Location: Chisinau, Moldova
Completed: 1978
Architects: Adolf Gorbuntsov and Vladimir Shalaginov
Former name: Hotel Intourist
Genre: Modernist, Soviet architecture, former USSR
The property was the city’s state-run Intourist Hotel from its completion in 1978 until 1992. During this period, it was one of only two hotels in Chisinau with an attached restaurant of good reputation. Also inside the 17-storey hotel was a Beriozka (Dollar/Friendship) store, where goods could only be purchased with hard currency. From 1992 until 2006, the property belonged to the state. Thereafter, it was privatised but the company that took it over failed to meet their obligations to reconstruct and modernise the hotel and it is now abandoned and its fate is in a state of limbo.
