Laguna Vere Sports Centre

Location: Tbilisi, Georgia

Completed: 1978

Architects: Shota Kavlashvili, Guram Abuladze, Ramaz Kiknadze (architects) and Koka Ignatov (artist)

Alternative name: Leminsky Komsomol Central Water and Sports Complex

Genre: Soviet artwork, former USSR

With three pools, a gym and a grandstand capable of holding 5,500 spectators among its facilities, the swimming complex was the first facility of its kind in the Caucasus. Both national and international events were held at the venue. Over time, the aquatic sports complex, which went into private ownership in 2000, became unprofitable and closed for good in 2014. The worst flood in Tbilisi’s history, which happened a year later, further sealed the sports centre’s fate. The monumental artwork which runs along the top of the former entrance to the swimming pool is one of the longest mosaics in Georgia.
