Monument to Vladimir Lenin
Location: Zeltini Missile Base, Latvia
Completed: 1970
Sculptor: G.Grundberga
Genre: Soviet monument, former USSR
Zeltini is a former secret Soviet missile base hidden in the Latvian forest. From the 1960s until the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s, ballistic missiles were stored in silos close to the launch pads and more often than not, the installation was on high alert. The large granite bust of Vladimir Lenin was originally unveiled in 1970 in Alūksne, a small town approximately 25km to the east of Zeltini. It was transported to the (by-then) defunct base in August 1991 by town locals to save it from potentially being destroyed after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
