The memorial is part of an ensemble that includes a grave for Red Army soldiers who were killed fighting for the liberation of Rakhiv during the Great Patriotic War (World War II), as well as a monument to the Ukrainian communist activist Oleksiy Borkanyuk (1901-1942). Borkanyuk was born in a village 30kms north of Rakhiv and during World War II, he was the leader of the underground anti-fascist movement in the Transcarpathian region. He was captured in Hungary in February 1942 and executed in Budapest a few months later. In 1945, his ashes were transported to Rakhiv.
