The monument commemorates the Battle of Bash-Aparan, which took place between 21st and 29th May 1918 and was one of three decisive Armenian victories during World War I that halted the Ottoman/Turkish invasion of Eastern Armenia. The other two important battles took place at Karakilisa (25-28 May 1918) and Sardarapat (22-29 May 1918).
