The monument was built to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of the founding of the Bulgarian State, the date of which was 681CE. The stone sculptures, paintings and mosaics depict important figures of the First Bulgarian Kingdom, including Khan Asparuh who is considered to be the founder of Bulgaria.
