The monument was erected in honour of the 50th anniversary of the 1923 September Uprising, a failed military insurgency in which the Bulgarian Communist Party attempted to overthrow the country’s government at the time, the recently appointed Democratic Alliance, in order to seize control for themselves. Being there is 1983 must have been fascinating! It is a wonderful country for sure – very diverse and packed with incredible things to see.
