Stepan Shahumyan (1878-1918) was an ethnic Armenian politician and Bolshevik revolutionary. He was the leader of the socialist 26 Baku Commissars and spearheaded the Russian revolution in the Caucasus. He was nicknamed the “Caucasian Lenin” and died at the hands of anti-Bolshevik forces while attempting to cross the Caspian Sea between Baku and Astrakhan in Southern Russia.
