The Hotel Latvija was the highest “B” category hotel of the USSR State Committee for Foreign Tourism and was built to host organised groups of foreign and Soviet tourists. A KGB telephone tapping unit was located on the upper floors. The property was reconstructed in two phrases between 2000 and 2006 and, at a structural height of 98.26 metres, the 27-storey high-rise remains the tallest hotel in Latvia.
