Serbia Travel Blog
Travel guides, itineraries, abandoned places, street art and off-the-beaten-path places in SerbiaMaybe you found our Serbia travel blog because you are considering a visit to the Balkans, or perhaps you are partway through planning a trip to the Republic of Serbia, as it is officially called. Whatever the reason, we hope we can provide some useful resources and travel tips for Serbia.
Part of the former Yugoslavia, Serbia shares borders with eight countries, making it a great base for exploring the region. The countries are Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Hungary.
Serbia has a reputation as being the Bad Boy of the Balkans, but we have felt nothing but welcome when travelling around the country. We’ve visited a handful of time and rate Belgrade as one of our favourite cities and somewhere we could imagine having a long-term base. Serbia will be one of the first places we return to when we can get back on the road.
Outside of the capital, Novi Sad is a pretty city with a relaxed vibe; further north the Art Nouveau in Subotica reflects its proximity to Hungary. In the south of the country, Nis and Novi Pazar are the main cities and worth a look. While Serbia doesn’t have any coast or large lakes, there are plenty of national parks for those who love the outdoors, and train spotters will enjoy the ride on the Sargan Eight narrow-gauge heritage railway near Mokra Gora. And of course, a large proportion of the time we spend in Serbia is dedicated to Yugo-nostalgia and seeking out spomeniks. We have seen over half of the major remaining monuments but have around ten to see.
Our Serbia blog posts are generally aimed at independent travellers and backpackers like us and have a strong focus on travelling around using public transport, staying in budget accommodation and exploring off-the-beaten-path and lesser-visited places.
