If you hike up the seemingly never-ending switchbacks of Kotor’s ancient ramparts you will eventually come to a fork in the road. Keep going on the original path and you will reach the castle but detour through a small stone opening to your left and you will enter a glorious valley, strewn with abandoned stone-houses and this lovely church, the Church of St.John.
St. George Church, Kotor
The Church of Saint George was built by Di Lorenzo. On the door frame it is written: “Di Lorenzo built this church of St. George for his wife Maria in 1559”.
One photo of the interior of the church shows the remains of frescoes, edged in Byzantine blue. It is intriguing, since, as far as I know, it is a characteristic of Orthodox churches that the interior is painted with frescoes. Maybe Di Lorenzo was Italian (Catholic), and his wife was Maria Orthodox, SO THAT’S WHY THE CHURCH IS ORTHODOX IN FORM, BECAUSE HE DEDICATED THE CHURCH TO HER…
Thank you very much for the additional information!
